Ice Skating

Some of us started as kids and have stayed in the sport ever since. But some of us can take a seat on our couches and appreciate the grace, athleticism and costumes of ice skaters, not many of us understand exactly how the sport works about ice skating. How can the judges develop their scores What makes one jump tougher compared to other The International Skating Union was founded in 1892 and also the first European Championships were locked in 1891. The first World Championship occured in Russia in 1896. The International Skating Union (or ISU) is an important regulatory body, overseeing details such as rules and performance standards. She took second place, after which it the skating union banned women from competing against the men and formed a 'women only' competition in Switzerland in 1906. In 1914 an international skating competition occured in Connecticut, formally introducing the sport to the U. S and Canada. The first artificial ice rink (mechanically-refrigerated) was built in 1876 at Chelsea, London, England and was named the Glaciarium. It was built near the King's Road working in london by John Gamgee. In 1914, John E. Strauss, a blade maker from St. Paul, Minnesota, invented the very first closed toe blade made from one piece of steel, making skates lighter and stronger. At world competition level, quadruple Salchow (four rotations) are increasingly being seen.

Ice skates are made from leather, nylon, plastic steel and various other synthetic materials. In most cases the raw materials are purchased from outside vendors. The final years leading up to World War I generally saw higher performance in most sports ice skating included. The largest public ice rink within the world, the Sportpalast in Berlin opened in the 1910s. The new rink increased both the public interest in figure skating as well as the number of individuals who practiced the sport.

Tanith switched from Canada towards the USA in order to skate with Benjamin Agosto. Today costumes frequently cost thousands of dollars.

Figure skates generally use a carbon steel which is softer. However with the wider blade, typically shallower hollows and less sticks, goals along with other skates to strike, most ice skaters goes several weeks between sharpenings.

Compulsory figures are variations around the figure 8 where the skater attempts to skate a perfectly round circle on a perfectly clean edge, after which do the same on the other foot. Competitive figure skating is governed by the International Skating Union (ISU).

During the last few years, a brand new boot design continues to be developed which would supply lateral support of the ankle while still allowing the skater to flex the ankle. It's hoped that this boot will not only reduce injuries but might actually improve skaters performances.

When you're a skater you would like your butt an inch off the floor and 3 feet within the air!
